Bristol and District lapidary society
How it all started
In February 1970, a story appeared in the bristolian newspaper New Observer about Mr. John Jones and his unusual hobby of creating jewellery and other attractive objects from pebbles and precious stones. Inspired, he brought together like-minded enthusiasts, leading to the creation of the Bristol and District Lapidary Society in March 1970.
Just two years later, the society had a fully equipped workroom in Barton Hill, Bristol, turning rough stones into polished gems.

Onwards and Upwards
By 1972, the Society grew to 42 members, united by a shared interest in the fascinating and absorbing hobby. Beyond the workroom, they bonded through quarry trips, beach pebble hunts, picnics, BBQs, Christmas parties, and more, creating a vibrant and welcoming community.
Interest in the Bristol & District lapidary Society grew as members showcased their work at exhibitions across Bristol and beyond.
